The beautiful old Edwardian mining town of Cullinan- 84 km from O.R. Tambo International and 51 km from Pretoria (Tshwane)

Cullinan is a beautiful old Edwardian mining town which is an 84 km drive from O.R. Tambo International and 51 km from Church Square, Pretoria.

Cullinan earned its place in history with the discovery of the Cullinan diamond in 1905, the largest rough gem diamond ever found at 3,106 carats, which was cut to form the two most important diamonds in the British Crown Jewels. It continues to produce world-class diamonds under Petra’s stewardship. The public can purchase diamonds at Cullinan.

Noteworthy landmarks in Cullinan include the 32ha hole that was created through the removal of more than 300 million tons of ore in search of diamonds. The Cullinan hole is 4 times bigger than the one at Kimberly.

The Zonderwater Museum and the Italian Military Cemetery alongside it are a tiny section of what today is the sprawling grounds of Zonderwater Prison. Once the largest prisoner of war camp created by the Allies, Zonderwater was set up in 1941 during World War II. The camp situated 50 km from Pretoria CDB, hosted more than 100 000 Italian soldiers captured by the British on the North and East Africa fronts from April 1941 to January 1947.

Cullinan Mystique is a historical building that dates back to 1904 and houses a collection of murals painted by Italian prisoners-of-war during World War ll. This was only discovered during later renovations of the building.

Oak Avenue is the main street in Cullinan which is lined with jacaranda and oak trees. It is a living museum and favourite destination amongst tourists. The St. Georges Anglican Church is a beautiful old stone building which was designed by Sir Thomas Baker. It is a popular attraction as it was the first church built in this historic village. Cullinan is well known for weddings, conferences, functions and accommodation venues.
